History of Highland Village

The community of Highland Village began as a weekend retreat for the elite of the Dallas  area.  In the early 1960s, residents began making the homes they had built along the wooded southern shoreline their permanent residence as an alternative to the congestion of the Dallas-Fort Worth  metro area.  In 1963, the small community decided to incorporate.  At the time of the 1970 census, the community only registered 516 residents.  With the opening of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, most communities north of the airport experienced massive growth.  By 1980 the community registered nearly 5,000 residents.  The community has continued to grow and has almost tripled in size since.
